CultureStrike, developed in 2010, is an artist-led project that uses the power of culture to create social change. Unbound was a founding investor in the organization. CultureStrike is a unique collaboration of respected writers, visual artists, musicians, and other cultural workers who partner with on-the-ground organizations to elevate stories of justice and equality through art. CultureStrike commissions, publishes, and disseminates new art and writing, sends writers and artists to the frontlines of the immigration debate, and organizes pro-immigrant cultural events. In a short period of time, CultureStrike has become an arts-strategy hub for the immigrant rights movement and a migrant-led innovator in cultural organizing.
Unbound has supported CultureStrike since 2011. We fund CultureStrike to generate and publicize art that increases public support for pro-migrant policies and that builds opposition to harsh enforcement measures. We also support CultureStrike to help advocacy organizations incorporate cultural organizing strategies into their work. And we support CultureStrike to increase the capacity, leadership, and visibility of artists—particularly those who face barriers to professional advancement, such as undocumented and female artists—to create and disseminate art that addresses social issues.
