Citizens UK, established in 1989, is at the forefront of community organising in the UK. Citizens UK works to build alliances where large numbers of people meet and associates, and to harness their collective power to take action on a range of issues, including immigration reform.
Unbound has funded Citizens UK continuously since 2009. We support all work undertaken by Citizens UK, including campaigns on social care and the living wage, but especially through supporting community organisers working in immigrant communities across the UK. Such organisers train and mobilise those communities to take action on issues that matter to them, whether it be housing, street safety, or how immigration rules are enforced. Unbound has encouraged ongoing exchange between Citizens UK and community organisers in the United States, most recently supporting an exchange between Citizens UK and Caring Across Generations. Citizens UK is also affiliated with the Chicago-based Industrial Areas Foundation.
Citizens UK has contributed to positive social change, including a significant contribution to the campaign to end the practice of detaining children in immigration detention and to increased support for the Living Wage across the UK.
